Milwaukee 543
The Mineral Point Zinc Company shipped thousands of cars out of Mineral Point in the early 1900s, but by the 1920s the zinc and lead market had collapsed and by 1935, the facilities were removed. Mineral Point was a busy place in the 1920's: a 1926 employee timetable shows 5 eastbound and 5 westbound scheduled trains!! In addition, there were two MP&N trains daily. On a Sunday afternoon in April, 1978, the Local is leaving Mineral Point with five 55 ton hoppers that brought in sand and gravel from Janesville for Ivey Construction Company. A large mound of mine tailings reminds us of Mineral Points past.

Andre Wehrle General Perhaps ultimately a good thing for Mineral Point that the mining days ended when they did...could have gone the way of towns like Picher, OK which was so contaminated by lead tailings the town had to be evacuated and abandoned. 2/7/2021 2:47:53 PM
